Theo Widdrington is set to join newly-promoted National League side Hornchurch. The 27-year-old midfielder, a former Aldershot Town player, is closing in on a permanent switch after leaving Hampton & Richmond Borough by mutual consent earlier this week.
Widdrington could make his debut for his new club as soon as Friday evening when Hornchurch host AFC Fylde. He brings significant experience to a side that has won seven games this season and sits 13th in the table, closer to the play-offs than the relegation zone. Hornchurch started the campaign strongly with four wins from their first five matches but have managed only three victories in their subsequent ten league outings. Manager Steve Morison has been seeking to bolster his squad to maintain their positive start in the division.
Aldershot's 2026-27 campaign
Widdrington's departure is a reminder of the significant squad turnover at Aldershot Town. The club bid farewell to 12 permanent players after the 2024-25 season, a campaign which saw them finish 20th in the National League, losing 26 of 46 matches and avoiding relegation by just four points under then-manager John Coleman. Widdrington was a key part of the Aldershot side that won the FA Trophy in 2025, beating Spennymoor Town 3-0 at Wembley, and made just shy of 100 appearances for the Shots across all competitions.
The current Aldershot side, now managed by Scott Davies, sits 16th in the National League after 15 games, with 18 points from five wins, three draws and seven defeats. They have scored 18 goals and conceded 19, leaving them with a minus one goal difference. The team's recent form shows two wins, one draw and two defeats from the last five, a sequence that includes consecutive losses to Wealdstone and Sutton United. Their most recent result was a 2-0 defeat away to Sutton United on Saturday 28 October. Davies has emphasised the need for consistency as they look to climb the table from a position 23 points behind the league leaders.
Widdrington, who has also had spells at King’s Lynn Town and Havant & Waterlooville, made seven appearances for Hampton & Richmond this season, scoring once in a 5-3 victory against Slough Town. His move to Hornchurch represents a fresh start for the experienced midfielder as he aims to help their promotion ambitions. Aldershot's focus remains on improving their own league position, with the next test coming against Gateshead. The club's sporting director has indicated further recruitment is planned for the January transfer window.
